Something I read the other day:
When a meal, a painting, a movie or an ad seems a little flat and boring, the likely culprit is insufficient divergence. Most creators, whether chefs, artists, cinematographers or ad writers, instinctively add what "feels right" throughout the creative process. And this is why average things are average.

"Feels right," you see, is just another way of saying "predictable."

The secret is to add what's widely divergent from anything that would be expected.

Drew's life, as described if it were a movie, and previewed on the back of a DVD case:

From the rolling hills of Arkansas, south of the Ouachita Mountains, comes a story of determination, of failure, and love.

Drew Stephens, a struggling college student who lives:

With his parents…
and
On Ramen Noodles…

…makes sometimes valiant efforts and occasionally great blunders in his quest to graduate college and find employment; as such things are encouraged by his supporting cast.

The Saga climaxes at a Malvern Waffle House, where drew proposes to a his girlfriend (played by DeAnja Taylor) over a meal of hash browns, bacon, and 2 pecan waffles.

Drew, forced to acknowledge the magnitude of his monetary -- vocational dilemma…is spurred to even more heights of action in recognition of his future marital status, and the responsibilities that such a merger would entail.

Follow Drew's story as he works through college, develops estranged relationships with professors, and his portfolio, and graduates in May 2003. And ride along as he takes to the streets, blanketing his job query to every possible place he can.

Can a redneck survive in the city?

DVD Features:

video interviews with college faculty:

Ex: Ed Martin Video Interview:

"Over the past 30 years here at Henderson State we've had some very gifted painters. Rarely have I ever had such a student like Drew. Drew has got to be ...if not the most ...but definitely in the top two or three, ..worst painters I've ever encountered ; An outstanding combination of total lack of skill and zero to five percent initiative. He's unique..

A student walking the halls possessing a fusion of those two traits, just doesn't come around very often."

"We're talking about a total absence of talent, and a remarkable level of deficient effort."

Bring the "press release" in there, somewhere, too.

I'm at that stage where, those sad songs that used to make you think about girls, yeah those songs, well now they remind me of and make me miss, my brother. Some of them anyway. It is strange and sad. I've only been to the grave 2 or 3 times. It's hard to handle. Car accidents should not happen.
